This week has been a “catch-up” week for me. Our boy is out of town, and I’ve finally been tackling those theology exams. No more procrastinating. No more telling myself I don’t have time while giving in to every distraction. I’ve had to refocus and press on. I told myself I wouldn’t write this week… but here I am. Just once. Just this.
With Father’s Day approaching, I keep watching all those sweet, emotional videos honoring dads. Little kids hugging their fathers. Grown men getting teary remembering theirs. Grandpas with grandbabies in their arms. And of course, all the dad jokes! So corny, yet somehow still funny. They get me every time. And they remind me just how crucial fathers are, not just in the lives of their children, but in their marriages, their homes, and the local church.
Scripture makes it clear that fatherhood is a calling from God.
"The righteous man walks in his integrity; blessed are his children after him!" Proverbs 20:7
"Just as a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him." Psalm 103:13
This not only highlights the blessing of a godly father but also reminds us that every faithful dad is a small reflection of our compassionate Heavenly Father.
As a mom, I used to look for a church with a solid kids' program or strong youth group. That’s still important. But as I’ve grown, I’ve come to see something else, just my own observation. The healthiest churches are often the ones with faithful, growing men. Not the ones with a quarterly breakfast or a once-a-year retreat, but where men gather weekly on their own, because they know they need each other and they want to follow Christ with their whole lives.
Whether they’re smoking their own brisket or microwaving a breakfast sandwich doesn’t matter. They’re not there because their wives organized it, begged them to go, or because of “happy wife, happy life.”
They go because they’re committed.
They go because they love the Lord.
They go because they want to be sharpened.
"Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens another." Proverbs 27:17
So this Father’s Day, we celebrate the men who love well, serve quietly, protect humbly, and lead faithfully. The ones who reflect the heart of God the Father in their homes and in the body of Christ.
But I also want to speak to the ones who may be grieving this weekend.
If your dad is in heaven…
If you never knew him…
If your earthly father hurt you, left you, or was never there in the way he should have been…
You are not forgotten.
You are not alone.
And you are deeply loved.
Because above all, we have The Father. Perfect, holy, patient, and full of mercy.
He is not like man. He does not fail. He does not walk away.
"Though my father and mother abandon me, the Lord cares for me." Psalm 27:10
"The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love." Psalm 103:8
"See what great love the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children and we are!" 1 John 3:1
"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." James 1:17
"And I will be a Father to you, and you will be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty." 2 Corinthians 6:18
He is your safe place.
He is your steady anchor.
He is your perfect Father.
So whether you're celebrating your dad, your granddad, your husband, or reflecting on someone you lost, remember this: the heart of fatherhood began with God Himself. Every good father reflects His goodness. And where our earthly fathers fall short, our Heavenly Father never does.
He sees you.
He loves you.
He is always with you.
This weekend, let’s celebrate all the good fathers in our lives and even more, lift our eyes higher and rejoice in the One who defines fatherhood and never changes.
Happy Father’s Day, friends.
Let’s worship the Father who is worthy of all honor.
Love,
Andrea
