This morning I was meditating on Colossians 3:16:
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
There’s so much beauty in that verse. It’s poetic, rich, full of community and worship and grace. And yet, when I read it, part of me also whispered, “Lord, I want this… but some days it feels so far from my reality.”
Let’s be honest. We’re living in a time of constant noise and busyness. There’s always something to do, something to respond to. A constant moment of stopping and checking, “Am I forgetting anything?” Even when we want to sit down with the Word, our phones buzz, our minds wander, and our to-do lists scream louder than the pages in front of us.
I’m not an anxious person, but I can be impatient. I like things to move, even if it’s slowly, I want to see growth, progress, direction. I’ve been a planner since I was a child. (I’ve loosened up a bit with age. Thankfully! You learn to pick your battles.) But I still tend to picture outcomes, run through possibilities, and mentally prepare for both the best and the worst. That kind of thinking has its strengths, but it also makes it hard to sit still. Hard to slow down and just be.
Because dwelling in God’s Word doesn’t always feel productive or efficient. It doesn’t check a box or show immediate results. Yet, it’s absolutely essential. Without the Word, we may keep going, keep up appearances, but our souls quietly starve. It’s the nourishment we need to truly live and grow in Him.
And Colossians 3:16 doesn’t just speak to our personal time with the Lord. It calls us into community. Teaching and admonishing one another. That means we’re not meant to carry this faith journey alone. We need other women, faithful sisters, who will remind us of truth when we forget. Who will sing when we can’t. Who will correct us gently and point us back to grace when we’re drifting. We need a circle.
And of course, in Titus 2, Paul exhorts older women to teach what is good and to train younger women in the faith. This is part of our calling as women in the church, to walk alongside one another with grace and truth. Not from a place of perfection, but from a place of dependence on Christ.
So, sister, if today feels noisy or full or a little off, start here. Not with pressure to do it all, but with the simple choice to open the Word. To let it dwell, not hover. To invite one verse to take root in your heart and guide your steps.
And if it’s been a while? That’s okay. Grace still sings.
And the Holy Spirit, our Helper (John 14:26), is still at work even in your weakness.
You're not alone. You are loved by a God who is patient, faithful, and present even in the middle of modern-day distractions. “He gives strength to the faint and strengthens the powerless.” (Isaiah 40:29)
Let’s keep showing up. Let’s be women of the Word.
Let’s help each other sing.
Blessings,
Andrea
